SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative)
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global organization that supports companies and financial institutions in setting and implementing science-based climate targets. The aim of the initiative is to bring the private sector into line with the requirements of the Paris Climate Agreement and to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. The SBTi enables companies to manage their emissions reductions in a targeted manner and make their progress transparent and verifiable.
What is the meaning of “science based”?
“Science-based” means that the emissions targets are based on the latest scientific findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and therefore make a clear contribution to combating climate change. SBTi develops clear guidelines and calculation bases that help companies to set targets for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. These targets are adapted to the respective industry and the individual carbon footprint.
Why is SBTi important?
SBTi provides companies with reliable guidance to develop long-term climate strategies and remain competitive. A climate-conscious approach is increasingly a decisive factor for investors, customers and partners. In addition, compliance with the SBTi standards ensures transparency and credibility, as the targets set are regularly reviewed.
How does the SBTi process work?
1. target setting: Companies commit to reducing their emissions in accordance with the SBTi criteria.
2. review: SBTi reviews the proposed targets and ensures that they meet scientific standards.
3. implementation: Companies implement their climate targets and report regularly on their progress.
4. re-certification: The targets set are evaluated every five years to ensure that they continue to meet the scientific requirements.
SBTi and Net-Zero
As part of their climate strategies, many companies now also offer “net-zero” targets. SBTi defines net zero as a state in which all remaining emissions are offset so that no net greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere. SBTi ensures that these net-zero targets are also scientifically sound and in line with global climate targets.
