Karlsruhe, Germany, November 27, 2024 – INERATEC has been awarded the German Sustainability Award 2025 (“Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis” 2025) in the category fuel industry. This award recognizes the company as an innovation leader and pioneer for the defossilization of the chemical industry and the transport sector - especially aviation and shipping. With groundbreaking projects such as the pioneer plant in Frankfurt, INERATEC is setting new standards to produce sustainable e-Fuels, i.e. fuels and chemicals made from electricity and recycled CO2.
INERATEC's pioneer plant in Frankfurt is a symbol of the future of sustainable fuel production. Every year, 7,000 tons of CO2 are recycled and converted into up to 3.5 million litres of e-Fuels. This is equivalent to the amount of fuel needed to fly around 70,000 medium-haul flights from Frankfurt to Mallorca in a climate-friendly manner (BDL, 2022). These sustainable fuels enable industries that are difficult to decarbonize to significantly reduce their carbon footprint.
“With the pioneer plant in Frankfurt, we are paving the way for the global availability of sustainable fuels. This flagship project will be followed by other, much larger plants in Europe and around the world,” Tim Boeltken, CEO of INERATEC explains.
The company has already installed over a dozen systems in Europe. Prominent examples include the use of an INERATEC plant in an e-Fuel project by VTT and Neste in Finland and further production plants in Germany. One of these is run by atmosfair in Werlte, Lower Saxony. Another INERATEC plant is in operation at Synhelion in Jülich. Further industrial plants in southern Europe are to follow, for example to recycle CO2 from forestry residues into sustainable e-Fuels in France. Internationally, INERATEC is strengthening its presence in Chile particularly, a country with ideal production conditions for synthetic fuels. Together with industrial partners, the company is planning to build several plants - from 3,500 tons to 50,000 tons of e-Fuel production per year.
Cutting-edge technology for e-Fuels: The key to defossilization
INERATEC builds upon a patented technology that produces e-Fuels with outstanding efficiency. These synthetic fuels meet the various standard requirements, such as ASTM-7665 for e-Kerosene (kerosene from electricity and CO2) for aviation, and can directly replace fossil fuels.
In addition to e-Kerosene, basic chemicals have also been REACH-registered, meaning that shipping and industry can use INERATEC products throughout Europe. With the successful registration of Power-to-Liquid products in Europe, INERATEC has set another milestone in the commercialization of sustainable fuels.
Award recognizes corporate development
“Winning the German Sustainability Award 2025 is a special feeling for us. It shows how far we have come since winning the Next Economy Award 2021 – reflecting the development from a start-up to a leading company in the fuel industry. This recognition makes us proud and motivates us to continue working on the transformation of the energy and chemical industry,” shares CEO Boeltken.
The official ceremony for the German Sustainability Award will take place on November 28 at the Maritim Hotel in Düsseldorf. This is where the 100 leading companies will come together to present their visions for a more sustainable future. INERATEC CCO Maximilian Backhaus will share his perspective on the climate transformation in Germany as part of the panel discussion and accept the award at the ceremony. INERATEC is looking forward to this evening with pride and anticipation - and to the next steps in the global energy transition.
